About the research

Before creation of any media products, research needed to be conducted on the topic of healthy eating, the target audience and the most importantly media products and how effective they are to the particular target market.

The research of our video mainly focuses on these parts: the necessity of topic, the attitudes of target audience, the effectiveness of video format and the placement of video. It is based on the primary research and the secondary research.

The primary research refers to the suvery questionnaire which aims to outline the key chacteristics of Insearch overseas students. Thirty Insearch overseas students, aged 18-25, completed a single, self-administered eating habits questionnaire that asked about their current food practices. The main limitation was that a number of participants had chosen not to complete the projective questions in the survey questionnaire and thus this restricts the range of answers acquired. However, this was only a small number and thus it did not significantly affect the overall results. The secondary research is the different kinds of literature reviews from the website and other journal articles.

I put the research details in the major documentation.

About the editing

Last semester we conducted video shooting, but no editing. I feel quite excited because we would learn some editing skills, even though it might be the basic skills. However, due to the time limition, we are not allowed to learn it step by step. Therefore, we can not edit the video skillfully. And this is just the very question that we are worried about.

As for myself, I'm quite interested in the media production and that is the future direction for me. However, the learning in class seems to be complicated because there is no text book to teach step by step. I just totally had no idea abou that.

Anyway, I strong hope our video will be shot successfully and orderly so that we can start editing earlier in order to complete it with the best quality!

About the script

The video script is based on the conversation between two overseas students. I divided the script into six scenes. The duration of video is about 5 minutes, thus I just simplify the conversation and try to be tricky together with the backgroud music. Here is the script:

Healthy eating student---Jim (J) Unhealthy eating student---Ben (B)

Scene One
J: Err…Ben?
B: Sorry, I don’t think I know you.
J: Sure you know! It’s me! I’m Jim. You couldn’t remember me?
B: …Jim? You are Jim? My friend Jim?
J: Yeah! It’s me. Come on!

Scene Two
B: Wow! You look amazing! I didn’t recognize you.
J: Same as me. You look not so good. Look at you, your skin is mat, you face is wax yellow, you eyes are just dull. No longer vivacious! What happened?
B: Everything is just so terrible! I have no spirit to study, and I’m so worried about my grade! Also my health is worse and worse. I really feel upset!
J: Oh, my poor friend! Don’t be upset. Everything will be fine, ok? I used to be just like you, but look at me now, I’m totally different!
B: What did you do? Tell me the secret!

Scene Three
J: Well, actually that’s not secret. I had no energy when I did sports. I felt very tired in the afternoon. And my skin was terrible. When I went to see doctor, he said there’s something wrong with my body, that’s I lack balanced nutrition. So I decided to change my eating habits. I eat plenty of fruit and vegetables everyday, even though I like fried food very much. I pay attention to care for myself well on eating, and just follow this principle. After days, I feel like I got a new body! Amazing! I am not tired any more in the afternoon. I really feel more energetic than before. And my skin is glossy, my friends ask me whether I wear the mask to school or not.
B: So that’s it?
J: Yes, that’s it.

Scene Four
B: Sounds great! I tried to eat healthily, but I had no idea about nutrition, and I’m not willing to follow the complicated principle. It’s just too hard for me. So I just ate fast food, always eating outside. I thought it was more convenient. When the exam’s coming, I had to drinks lots coffee at night. When I felt struggle, I always ate many snacks, especially the ice-cream and fried food. That’s the reason I always feel sleepy in the class and couldn’t submit assignments with good quality.
J: Sounds you really lived in a bad way.
B: I knew that, but I couldn’t find the appropriate way.
J: You are lucky! Because I’m here now, so let me an angle.

Scene Five
J: So it’s just very easy. All you have to do is eating fruit and vegetables which you like every day. If possible, you may have more than one kind of vegetable, you know: More, better.
B: But…but I don’t know how to cook.
J: Come on, man! You must be kidding.
B: Seriously!
J: All right. Let’s just go to my house and I’ll teach you some dishes.

Scene Six
Slice show: Different eating habits make you different!

About the treatment (simplified)

The storyline of this video is based on the conversation between two overseas students, who have not seen each other for a long time. One day, they meet at Insearch campus. They could not recognize each other successfully because they are fairly surprised by mutual changes on appearance. One of them looks amazing while the other one looks dispirited. The sound effect of this plot is chatter. The tricky music will be added as the background music when in editing in order to make it interesting.

Later on, they talk about each other’s changes and recall the totally different life time in the past days, especially the eating. One student says he lives in an energetic way because he takes in fruit and vegetables appropriately. On the contrary, the other one says he always struggles with his school affairs and spirit mainly because he ignores the importance of health and eats food randomly. The sound effect is chatter as well. Different music sorts will be put in this plot. Pleased music will be added when first student is recalling. Upset and lost music is going to be placed when the second student is recalling. The usage of different music sorts is to tell the difference between two statuses as well as two kind of lifestyle.

Afterwards, the healthy eating student assist the unhealthy eating student to solve his eating problem by teaching him the simple and effective meal plan called “2 fruit and 5 vegetables”. He says eating plenty of fruit and vegetables not only contributes to good health, but also protects against a number of diseases and helps maintain a healthy weight. The sound effect of this plot is still chatter. And the background music is quite happy. Meanwhile, the unhealthy eating student is suddenly enlightened to find out the solution as well as gaining the knowledge.

The enlightened slice show is placed in the last scene “Different eating habits make you different!” with white text and black background.

The POV of this video basically keeps the scene at the appropriate shot and edits in a simple shot. That is, making sure there are enough heading room and looking room in order to fit the feeling between two friends

About the video and camera work

Each group member will be responsible for a task of major project. However, no group member will work alone, as the group will assist other members in order to complete the project with best quality on time. The following task allocation shows rational arrangement of project:

Maggie---Camera Operator. Maggie’s responsibility is to achieve smooth camera movement and produce satisfactory pictorial images.

Lary---Assistant director. Lary’s task is controlling the shooting schedule and keeping the production on schedule, such as summoning the actors, crew and logistical support to the correct place at the right time.

Kiko---Director. I am responsible for leading and control people, having crews do what I want them to do, yet remain on good terms.

Event though we did video shooting in the last semester, we are still new at the camera work. It might take longer time for us to prepare and shoot, so it's better to plan and start earlier.
